They also stated that Shan Masood is a strong contender for the captaincy in the next Test series against Australia, while Shaheen Shah Afridi is a strong contender for the T20I series in New Zealand.
According to insiders, Shaheen may also captain the Green Shirts in next year’s T20 World Cup. Babar was named white-ball captain in 2019 and Test captain in 2020, however the Green Shirts have yet to win an ICC or Asia Cup under his command.
Although Pakistan entered the World Cup as the top-ranked team, they were unable to prove their worth and were eliminated in the group round. Mickey Arthur, the team’s director, had thrown his support behind “depressed” Babar following the Green Shirts’ World Cup collapse, saying that making mistakes is not a “crime.”
The captain is slated to meet with PCB Management Committee Chairman Zaka Ashraf later today, and an announcement on his captaincy is expected to follow.
