South Africa withdraws to host 2027 Women’s World Cup
The football association (SAFA) said on Friday that South Africa has dropped their bid to host the 2027 Women’s World Cup. FIFA confirmed four bids, and South Africa was one of them. However, the country will now focus on putting in a bid for the 2031 event.
“Rather than making a rushed presentation, we thought it was better to present a well-prepared bid for the 2031 FIFA Women’s World Cup and make sure we put our best foot forward,” SAFA CEO Lydia Monyepao said on the FA’s website.
A bid from Belgium, Germany, and the Netherlands, a bid from Brazil, and a bid from Mexico and the United States are the only ones left. On May 17, 2024, the FIFA Congress will choose the hosts. It was held in Australia and New Zealand in 2023, and Spain won. In 2026, the men’s World Cup will be held in three countries: the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
