During the tenure of the now-former chairman, Pakistan’s cricket team was unable to advance to the Asia Cup 2023 final and was eliminated from the World Cup 2023 before it could reach the semifinals. The media station owner Naqvi, who is currently Punjab’s acting chief minister, was named by the premier after his resignation. Shortly after the news emerged, Naqvi confirmed his nomination to reporters in Lahore.

This comes after Zaka Ashraf resigned from his position as chairman of the Management Committee. So, Naqvi took his place as a member of the Board of Governors. On July 6, Ashraf joined the PCB’s Board of Governors (BoG) and took over as Chairman, succeeding Najam Sethi in that capacity. Ashraf resigned from the position last Friday.

“I was working to improve cricket, but this is not how we can work as a team,” he was said to have said by those in attendance at the continuing committee meeting.

“I’ll work to resolve the problems hurting cricket in Pakistan. Reforms in cricket are urgently needed, according to Naqvi.

Subsequent to Ashraf’s resignation being accepted, Election Commissioner Shah Khawar assumed oversight of the PCB’s operations. Khawar has been instructed to hasten the establishment of the BoG and guarantee a prompt and transparent election process. In the case that the chairman position becomes empty, the Chief Election Commissioner receives all authority pursuant to Clause 2 of Article 7 of the PCB constitution.

Caretaker Federal Minister for Privatization and Inter-Provincial Coordination Fawad Hasan Fawad confirmed the developments in an exclusive interview with Geo News, stating that Khawar, the interim PCB Chairman, has been instructed to expedite the formation of the BoG and guarantee a quick and transparent election process. The minister additionally affirmed that Naqvi’s nomination for the PCB’s Board of Governors has been published.

Given the current circumstances, Naqvi may become PCB chairman. However, sources told Geo News that by the time he took over. He would have resigned as Punjab’s chief executive due to the outcome of the general elections on February 8.
