PCB releases ODI squad for West Indies
PCB names 16-player team for three ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League ODIs against West Indies. As the series won’t be played under a Managed Event Environment, the selectors cut the 21-player team to 16 players. Asif Afridi, Asif Ali, Haider Ali, and Usman Qadir won’t play next month. Saud Shakeel wasn’t considered since he needs sinus surgery. The matches are on June 8, 10, and 12. Shadab Khan, who missed the Australia ODIs owing to injury, is back as vice-captain.
Haris Rauf, Hasan Ali, Mohammad Rizwan, and Shadab Khan will join the team in time for the June 1 training camp in Rawalpindi. As the ODIs against the West Indies are part of ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 qualifying, we chose to provide our team the greatest opportunity to earn maximum points and increase our prospects of going straight to the elite 50-over competition. We’ve kept the same key players so they can establish themselves. I hope they can maintain their Australia form. We lowered the squad size to 16 players since there will be no Managed Event Environment and players might be summoned at short notice. “We named backup players for injured Australia ODI players.
Asif Afridi and Usman Qadir were left out because Mohammad Nawaz and Shadab Khan are now totally healthy. Usman, Asif Ali, and Haider Ali remain in the PCB’s plans for T20I this year, including the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022.
