The sources stated Afridi is “displeased” by the controversy and that players at the army fitness camp in Kakul are discussing the captaincy. The selection committee reportedly approached the T20 captain about the incident.

After Pakistan’s humiliating 2023 ODI World Cup defeat, the PCB selected Shaheen as T20 captain and Shan Masood as Test captain. Babar Azam resigned from all captaincy roles. Babar has been the leading candidate for the spot after Lahore Qalandars’ poor performance in the Pakistan Super League’s ninth edition and the PCB structure change.

Chief Operating Officer Salman Naseer, selection committee members Mohammad Yousuf, Wahab Riaz, Abdul Razzaq, Bilal Afzal, and Director of International Cricket Usman Wahla attended a Thursday meeting chaired by PCB chief Mohsin Naqvi. The late-night huddle saw selection committee members propose national cricket team captains.

Leadership and coaching changes for the T20 World Cup 2024 were discussed. The PCB has advertised on its website to hire separate coaches for red-ball and white-ball cricket. While Gary Kirsten is a candidate for white-ball cricket head coach, Jason Gillespie may handle red-ball coaching.
