“The 2022 FIFA World Cup stands as one of the greatest events in sports history, intrinsically linked to Messi’s valiant journey and firmly establishing his status as the greatest player of all time,” said Sotheby’s head of modern collectibles Brahm Wachter

“These six shirts are a milestone in auction history, connecting fans and collectors to Messi’s greatest achievement. Sotheby’s is honoured to display these unique collectibles, which capture the genius of a player who has redefined football excellence.”

Thus, the footballer wore these shirts in the first halves of the group-stage matches against Saudi Arabia and Mexico, Australia, the Netherlands, Croatia, and France, and the final.

Argentina’s success in Qatar last year was the forward’s last World Cup title after four failures. So, Sotheby’s estimated the jerseys could sell for over $10 million, making it the most lucrative sports memorabilia auction ever. Michael Jordan’s 1998 NBA finals jersey was the most expensive ever sold at auction.

It sold for $10.1m last year. Recently, auction houses have noticed sports memorabilia, a rising sector. AC Momento, a US tech business that helps athletes maintain memorabilia, is auctioning the shirts. When auctioned, the jerseys will be offered to view from November 30 until December 14.
