India Lost To Bangladesh and lost chance to be No. 1 in all formats

The Super Four setback over Bangladesh in the Asia Cup cost India a wonderful opportunity to dominate the rankings charts across all formats. Prior to the Asia Cup match against Bangladesh on Friday, 15 September, India was rated second on the MRF Tyres ICC Men’s ODI Team Rankings with 116 rating points, trailing top-ranked Australia, which had 118 points.

India, which currently leads the Test and T20I rankings, had a golden opportunity to claim the top spot in ODIs if two conditions were met: defeating Bangladesh in the Asia Cup Super Four clash and South Africa defeating top-ranked Australia in the penultimate ODI of their five-match series.

The loss to Bangladesh not only cost India the opportunity to hold the top spot across all formats, but it also dropped them to third place in the rankings standings, 114 points behind Pakistan and Australia.

Australia and Pakistan are now separated by a tiny rating margin, with Australia ranking first at 115.259 and Pakistan ranking second at 114.889. Even if Australia loses their final ODI against South Africa and India wins the Asia Cup on Sunday (September 17), India would not be able to claim the No. 1 ranking. However, if Australia loses, Pakistan will be able to take over as the top team.
