Atherton makes a bold choice for England’s team
Michael Atherton is a former England captain. He believes that Harry Brook should make his international debut in this week’s Test match against New Zealand. The recent additions of Ben Stokes as captain. Plus, Brendon McCullum as a coach have provided a few pointers into England’s selection conundrum. Together with critical World Test Championship points at stake.
Only one Test victory in the past year has put England in contention for the WTC Final, and they must get rolling immediately under the leadership of their new captain and coach if they are to have any chance of reaching the final. Ben Stokes expects James Anderson and Stuart Broad to be reinstated for the three-match series against the Kiwis, while Joe Root will resume his customary position at No. 4 and the next Test captain will bat at No. 6.
Atherton believes that England should select Brook over Ollie Pope or Jonny Bairstow for a top-six position. Brook scored 840 runs for Yorkshire in this year’s County Championships, and Atherton believes this week’s first Test against New Zealand at Lord’s is the perfect occasion to test the 23-year-old.
“I’d have to pick him (Brook) ahead of Bairstow at No.5, just because of the form he is in. His first-class form has been exceptional,” Atherton told Sky Sports.
“When you pick a young player is so important and he will never be in better form than this, never be more confident than this.
“He may go off the boil at some stage and then if you put him in the team it might be slightly unfortunate.”
