First Pakistani lady summits 11th-highest mountain

Naila Kiani, a Pakistani mountaineer based in Dubai, made history on Friday by becoming the first Pakistani woman to reach the summit of Gasherbrum-1, the world’s eleventh-highest mountain at an elevation of 8080 metres. At about 7:45 a.m. local time in Pakistan, Naila reached the summit of G-1. She is the first Pakistani woman to climb three of the world’s fourteen peaks above 8,000 metres, all located within Pakistan. Naila, a mother of two, climbed K2, the second tallest peak in the world, last month.

She had previously climbed 8034m Gasherbrum-1, the world’s 13th highest mountain, in 2021. She was the second person to reach the summit of K2 that day, and she did so just a few hours after Samian Baig, the first Pakistani woman to do so. Samina has reached the summit of the tallest mountain in the world, Everest. Naila told Geo.tv on her trip to the summit of Gasherbrum-1 that G-1, also known as K-5, was more challenging for her than K2 because of the high winds.

“Summit, Alhamdulilah,” she texted from her satellite phone.

“Unbelievable, only three weeks after K2. It was harder than K2. No rope on most technical sections,” she added.

“It’s definitely more difficult than K2, for sure,” she said via satellite device from C3 before pushing for the final summit.
