First Pakistani woman to summit K2

Two Pakistani women climbers want to reach the top of K2, the world’s second-highest peak at 8,611 meters. Even though the mountain is known for being one of the hardest to climb in the world, only a few women have made it to the top. Samina Baig and Naila Kiani, two climbers from Pakistan, are planning to reach the top of K2 this year. Samina was the first Pakistani woman to reach the top of Everest in 2013. She went from Skardu to the K2 basecamp on her way to Camp 1.

On July 3, she is expected to finish her climb, but when she does so will depend on the weather at the peak. She tried to climb K2 twice, in 2015 and 2021, but bad weather and accidents meant that she had to give up both times. Naila lives in Dubai right now. She moved to Pakistan on Thursday night and will move to Skardu on Saturday. On Sunday, she will go to the K2 base camp. Kiani was the first woman from Pakistan to reach the top of the 8,035-meter Gasherbrum II. She was also the first woman from Pakistan to reach an 8,000-meter peak.
