On Wednesday, Babar Azam offered to step down as the white-ball captain of the Pakistan team. He, through a social media post, claimed the need for more dedication to his batting skills and that captaincy burdens him with extra work. Notably, this is the second time he has given up the captaincy of the Pakistan team, the first time being last November after the poor show of Pakistan in the ODI World Cup 2023.
The news of his resignation as captain by Babar sent fans and general enthusiasts of the game into overdrive on social media.
His reappointment as captain of the Pakistan team in T20Is and ODIs, Babar’s tenure as captain continued to get worse as they lost a four-match T20I series against England 0-2. The performance graphs of Pakistan under Babar dipped even further as they made a group-stage exit in the T20 World Cup 2024.
Social media lit up the decision of Babar’s resignation as captain with all manner of scathing remarks. Some of the users pointed to his miserable captaincy record in major ICC tournaments, while others mentioned the second time that Babar is resigning from captaincy duties.
