Rob Walter Confident in Proteas’ Champions Trophy Prep

Rob Walter, South Africa’s white-ball coach, is confident about the February–March 2025 Champions Trophy. He spoke following South Africa’s 3-0 home ODI whitewash loss against Pakistan. They’ll shine at world events and marquee events. Usually men step up. “They bring their best cricket,” Walter added. “We’ve seen that in two World Cups in a row.”

He acknowledged the challenges ahead but noted the contrasts in Champions Trophy preparation from the World Cup.

“The Champions Trophy lead-up won’t be like the World Cup. The schedule is set up that manner. I trust our players’ quality, though. Switching formats may be difficult, but these men have 50-over cricket expertise. He stated he believed we will be ready when needed.

Walter said his alternatives for the renowned event are limited due to injury and team selection issues.

“As a batting unit, we’ve spoken about someone taking pride in getting in and scoring a big hundred, and to be fair, we just haven’t been able to convert anything into really substantial knocks or partnerships in this series,” said.

batting blunders and opposing bowling quality are to blame. We must acknowledge and address it.”

The 49-year-old also supported Tony de Zorzi as Temba Bavuma’s opening partner, while Ryan Rickelton is another alternative.

“Tony de Zorzi hit 26 at the Wanderers tonight and was batting superbly until he was bowled by a beast. Finally, how do you evaluate that and what do you discuss? I want him to keep playing like he did since he was leading us till then “Walter stated.

“These things happen, but it’s vital to know that athletes desire to improve. Want to convert. They want massive hundreds. Not due to laziness. Again, I must believe that conversion will begin, hopefully soon.”

Walter is focused on the forthcoming Test series, when the Proteas hope to reach the World Test Championship final.

“We’ll focus on these Test matches and reaching the World Test Championship final as a Proteas family. He stated all the boys will play in the SA20, a very competitive cricket tournament in a different format.

“I’m optimistic that when the time comes, we’ll pull together,” he said.
