Pakistan’s Shajar Abbas qualifies for the CWG 200m final

Friday, Pakistani sprinter Shajar Abbas made it to the final of the 200-meter race at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. Shajar came in third in the first semi-final with a time of 20.89, which was good enough for third place. Shajar could not qualify based on the results of his heats alone, so he had to wait to see how long it took other athletes to finish. For the final event, the two fastest times and the top two finishers in each of the three semi-final races would be chosen.

The Pakistani athlete’s hopes were only kept alive by the top two finishers in race 2. Sibusiso Matsenjwa of Eswatini and Mike Mokamba Nyangau of Kenya came in third and fourth in race 3 with times of 20.81 and 20.90 seconds, respectively, after the winner, Shajar Abbas. Shajar got into the 200-meter final on Saturday night by finishing in the top eight. She is the only Asian person who made it to the finals of the 200-meter race.
