Three players have fewer than 100 international appearances, and only three have more than 100, including captain Umar Bhutta. The squad consists of 14 players with about 15 international matches. Bhutta is the team’s most seasoned player, appearing in 177 games. According to Pakistan’s head coach, Siegfried Aikman, building a new team that can compete with the best teams in modern hockey is a top priority.
AT AIKMAN’S REQUEST, the PHF arranged a training tour to Holland, Belgium, and Spain last month. There they played tests and won one match each against under-strength Dutch and Spanish teams. During the tour, Aikman says, he was abevaluatedurrent crop of Pakistani hockey players and planned for the Asia Cup.
