Ireland defeated Pakistan 13 runs in the rain-soaked ICC Women’s U19 T20 World Cup match at the Johor Cricket Academy Oval on Wednesday thanks to Alice Walsh’s quickfire cameo. After their campaign opener against the USA was washed out, the green shirts lost their remaining match and England and Ireland, finishing last in Group C with one point.
However, Ireland joined table-toppers England and USA in qualifying for the 12-team Super Six stage, separated into two groups.
Pakistan required 73 runs in nine overs to advance in the 16-team tournament in the must-win match.
The green shirts started well but only reached 59/7 in the allocated overs. Opening pair Fatima Khan and Komal Khan scored 24 runs in 2.1 overs to set the stage for the run chase.
However, Fatima, the main aggressor of the stand, was run out after scoring seven balls 10. After her removal, Pakistan lost wickets at an alarming rate, halting their run flow and limiting them to 59/7.
Skipper Komal Khan scored a run-a-ball 12 to lead Pakistan, while Fatima and Areesha Ansari scored 10. Ellie McGee took two wickets for Ireland, while Sargent and Lara McBride each took one.
Ireland batted first and scored 69/5 in nine overs owing to Walsh’s quickfire cameo at the top. Walsh scored 31 off 19 balls, leading Ireland, followed by Annabel Squires (13) and Sargent (10).
Memoona Khalid took two wickets, Quratulain Ahsen and Mahnoor Zeb each dismissed one batter for Pakistan.
