After a match at the Italian Open, Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic was signing autographs for spectators when an aluminum-type bottle struck his head, sending him to his knees, according Fox News.
Novak Djokovic kneel after water bottle hits head at Italian Open
Following Corentin Moutet’s 6-3, 6-1, loss on Friday, Djokovic, 36, received medical attention for a head injury after a bottle dropped from the stands while he was mingling with supporters.
The crowd gasped audibly as the bottle struck Djokovic and the ground. Djokovic went to his knees and covered his head for almost a minute before receiving assistance getting into the tunnel.
“Underwent appropriate medication and has already left the Foro Italico to return to his hotel; his condition is not a cause for concern,” the Italian Open stated.
An other view has the bottle slipping out of a fan’s backpack and striking the tennis player in the head. Italian Tennis Federation spokesman Alessandro Catapano said Djokovic had a bump on his head and some blood, but he did not need stitches.
Once at his hotel, Nole appeared to be in good health. Though upset, he seemed to be OK, Catapano said. Djokovic played his first match of the competition and in almost a month. His next tournament is the French Open, which begins on May 26.
