New Test record struck by Rabada over Waqar Younis

South One day into the inaugural Test against Bangladesh, African fast bowler Kagiso Rabada became the fastest pacer to reach 300 wickets in Tests, surpassing Pakistan’s Waqar Younis.

The right-arm bowler broke Younis’ 24-year-old record of 300 Test wickets in 12,602 deliveries in 11,817 balls in 65 tests. Rabada, 29, took 3-26 from 11 overs as Bangladesh was bowled out for 106 and South Africa replied with 140-6 before bad light ended play.

Sixteen wickets fell on the first day of the spin-heavy two-test series.

“We thought it was going to turn, not nip, but with the new ball, there was a bit of movement,” Rabada told a news conference.

“Good seam action off the wicket, but little swing.

True, that happened in the nets. What you get in the nets is usually in the middle. Spinners will turn and seamers will seam. We were surprised, said Rabada, adding that he had not been focusing on the 300-wicket milestone but knew he was close. After losing the toss and bowling first, I focused on winning this test. It was a relief when it happened. Everybody plays milestones, but it was calming.

“A special moment. He said he didn’t know about the record, but it inspires him to perform better.

Rabada became the sixth South African bowler reach 300 test wickets after Dale Steyn (439), Shaun Pollock (421), Makhaya Ntini (390), Allan Donald (330), and Morne Morkel (309)
