Maria Khan becomes Pakistan’s new women’s football captain
The Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) announced Maria Khan as the team’s new captain a month before the South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) Championship. The former goalie turned midfielder grew up in the United States, where he played football for the University of Denver, before attending college in the United Arab Emirates. When she was in the UAE, she tried out for a local club and made the team.
Hajra Khan captained the Pakistani women’s national team in their final international match in 2014. The responsibilities were taken over by Maria. Hajra will continue to serve as a member of the squad. Vice-Captain Malika-e-Noor has assumed command of the ship.
She also participated in the final senior women’s football match played in Pakistan in 2014. The federation has ensured that there would be 23 members on the SAFF Women Cup team. The roster was released by Geo on August 24. The Pakistan women’s squad in 2014 included Hajra, Malika-e-Noor, Nisha Ashraf, Roshan Ali, Sahar Zaman, Mahpara Shahid, and Zulfia Nazir.
