Jay Shah to become ICC chairman?
Barclay decided after Shah declared his intention to become ICC chairman. Thus, he claimed backing from other members. Posted on August 21, 2024 by Web Desk. The Age reported Wednesday that BCCI secretary Jay Shah will replace Greg Barclay as ICC chairman.
Shah appeared to be a strong candidate for the top job after Barclay. He had chaired the ICC since November 2020, notified the directors via video chat on Tuesday night that he was resigning.
So, after Shah declared his ambition to become ICC chairman and claimed backing from other members, Barclay made his decision.
“ICC chair Greg Barclay informed the board that he will not seek a third term and will resign at the end of November. Barclay became independent ICC chair in November 2020 and was re-elected in 2022 “ICC spokeswoman told The Age.
“Current directors are now required to put forward nominations for the next chair by 27 August 2024. So, if there is more than one candidate, an election will be held. It will be with the term of the new chair commencing on 1 December 2024.”
Shah would follow India’s Jagmohan Dalmiya and Sharad Pawar as ICC chiefs if elected.
Shah said he has support from England and Australia to become the ICC’s next chairman for at least three years.
The 35-year-old BCCI secretary, whose term expires next year, will become the youngest ICC chairman.
Shah became ICC chairman at a time when India’s participation in the 2025 Champions Trophy, which will be played in Pakistan from February to March, is uncertain.
