India’s top batsman may miss the T20 World Cup

Sunil Gavaskar, a former captain of India, says that Shikhar Dhawan is not likely to come back and play in this year’s ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. Dhawan has played in the T20 World Cup for India twice, in 2014 and 2016. This year, he did well in the IPL, which has put his name back in the running for the team. But he didn’t play in India’s last five-match series against South Africa. Instead, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Ishan Kishan were picked, while Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul sat out. So, Dhawan won’t be able to go on the next white-ball tour of the UK, which will start with two games against Ireland at the end of this month. Rahul, the first choice opener, is still a question mark, but Gavaskar doesn’t think Dhawan will be good enough to play in his third T20 World Cup in October.

Gaikwad and Kishan each scored 50 runs in the most recent South African series to help their chances of going to Australia. Kishan’s 206 runs at an average of over 40 were especially impressive. On the other hand, Gavaskar is sure that India’s best opening pair will be in Australia if all players are healthy enough to play. The T20 World Cup starts on October 16, and India’s first game is at the MCG on October 23 against Pakistan.

“No. I don’t see his name popping up,” a blunt Gavaskar told Star Sports.

“If it had to pop up, it would have been in this squad (to play Ireland).

“A lot of guys have gone to England and he could have been in this squad.

“If he is not in this squad, I don’t see him ending in the mix (for T20 World Cup).”
