Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj each grabbed three wickets as India beat Australia by 295 runs in the first test at Perth Stadium on Monday.
India took a 1-0 lead in the five-match series as paceman Harshit Rana clean-bowled keeper Alex Carey for 36 in the fourth innings to bowl Australia out for 238 after dinner on day four. Australia last won a home series after losing the first test 55 years ago against West Indies.
“Fairly disappointing,” said Australia skipper Pat Cummins.
One of those games where nothing went right. We didn’t give ourselves a chance in several areas, so we have to clean up.”
After batting on a seaming opening day, India were all out for 150 before Bumrah’s five-fer dismissed Australia for 104.
Virat Kohli and Yashasvi Jaiswal led the tourists to 487-6, setting the hosts a huge 534 in the fourth innings. The hosts lost Usman Khawaja (four) on day four when the opener mistimed Siraj (3-51) to wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant.
Rana (1-69) bowled with fire, bowling rib-ticklers that immobilized Steve Smith and got Travis Head leaping as they added 62. After an unsuccessful opening experiment, Steve Smith returned to his preferred number four position and fell behind Siraj on 17.
Head hit many boundaries on his way to 89 but edged to Pant off Bumrah (3-42), who took eight wickets. Bumrah captained the team in place of Rohit Sharma, who missed the match after having his second kid but has since returned.
“Very happy with the beginning, we were under pressure in the first innings but the way we responded after that, I’m really proud of the team,” said Player of the Match Bumrah, who scored 8-72 in both innings.
“This wicket was less spicy than the last one I played here, but we were well prepared.
“So I was just telling everyone to have faith in their process and ability, because over here at this moment, you have an opportunity to do something special.”
Mitchell Marsh scored 47 before slicing newcomer Nitish Kumar Reddy onto his stumps, and Dhrev Jurel caught Mitchell Starc (12) off Washington Sundar (2-48) at short-leg before tea.
Washington dismissed Australia spinner Nathan Lyon for a duck after the interval as India won a welcome match after being defeated 3-0 at home by New Zealand earlier this month.
