Hardik Pandya to skipper India T20I instead of Rohit Sharma

After Rohit Sharma retired from T20I after winning the T20 World Cup 2024, fast bowling all-rounder Hardik Pandya may replace him as captain. Indian media said that Pandya will be rewarded for his mega-event performance and Jasprit Bumrah will be named vice-captain.

In the final against the Proteas, Pandya bowled the last over and defended the target, helping India win the T20 World Cup. Heinrich Klaasen, who almost cost the Blues the game, was also substituted. Bumrah and Suryakumar Yadav were also considered for the captaincy, but Pandya is the favourite for the T20I series against Sri Lanka.

We want to give Pandya enough time and matches to prepare for the 2026 T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka. Shubman Gill leads India in a five-match T20I series against Zimbabwe. The series is knotted 1-1 after the Blues won the second T20I by 100 runs.

Rohit will lead India in the World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 and Champions Trophy 2025, according to BCCI Secretary Jay Shah. Sharma led India to a thrilling T20 World Cup success over South Africa in Bridgetown, ending their 11-year ICC trophy drought.

Since Virat Kohli resigned in 2021, Sharma has led India to the WTC 2021-23 and ODI World Cup 2023 finals, where they lost to Australia. Shah added, “I am confident that under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma, we will win the WTC Final and the Champions Trophy,” in a BCCI video.
