England set a new ODI record

In the opening game of a three-match series, England tallied 498-4 against the Netherlands at VRA Cricket Ground. We haven’t seen a higher team total in one-day international cricket (ODI). As a result of the havoc Phil Salt, Dawid Malan, and Jos Butler wreaked in Amstelveen, the English squad amassed the highest ODI total ever. Eoin Morgan’s squad beat their own record of 481-6, which they had established against Australia at Trent Bridge in 2018, in the first game of the three-match series. Buttler refused to leave the field and scored 162 runs in the game.

Only one ball slower than his own record for England’s fastest century did he hit his century, which came in at 47 balls. Two other players, Salt and Malan, also hit 100. It was the fastest 50 in England’s ODI history by Liam Livingstone, who batted in the sixth position. He completed it in the second-fastest time of all time, with 17 balls.

After Salt and Dawid Malan put up 222 runs together, Van Beek caught Salt when he tried to hit a slower, shorter ball with his bat. England had a strong lead after Malan and Buttler put up 184 runs together. Malan was out for 125 when Pieter Seelaar bowled a long ball to deep midwicket. Malan seemed to be out LBW on 25 off the bowling of the Dutch captain, but the Third Umpire changed the initial out call and saved him.
