Inter Miami’s pursuit of MLS’s single-season points record was halted by New York City FC’s last-minute equalizer. After Messi set up Leonardo Campana’s 75th-minute goal, Miami appeared in control at Yankee Stadium.
In stoppage time, New York defender James Sands sprang high to head a Santiago Rodriguez corner beyond Miami goalie Drake Callender, tying the game. The late goal ended Miami’s aspirations of winning their 20th game of the season and left them with 64 points from 30 games, needing nine points from the final four to match New England Revolution’s 2021 record of 73 points.
Despite the disappointing finish, Inter Miami had several close calls. Messi nearly scored with a free-kick in the fourth minute, and New York had many great chances. Santiago Rodriguez’s free-kick hit the post, while Keaton Parks missed a clear goal in the 47th minute.
Messi’s vision found Jordi Alba in space, allowing Miami to counterattack. Alba passed to Campana, who scored to put Miami up and presumably winning.
But New York’s perseverance paid off in the end. Rodriguez delivered a superbly placed corner kick in the fifth minute of stoppage time, and Sands’ thunderous header surprised Miami. Miami lost two points and complicated their MLS history quest with the draw.
Miami coach Gerardo Martino must motivate his players to break the record in their remaining four games. Miami is still a strong team, assured of a playoff position, and Messi continues to amaze.
The MLS season ends with a tight record chase. Every match is crucial for Miami to create history. For now, the club must recuperate swiftly and focus on their forthcoming obstacles to make a mark on the season.
