David Wiese impresses as Namibia beats Oman

After Namibia and Oman went into a super over, David Wiese shone for the winning team as he helped to defend the 22-run goal. In the T20 World Cup 2024 match, held at the Kensington Oval in Barbados capital Bridgetown, Namibia scored 109-6 in 20 overs while chasing 110 against Oman. Wiese could not get the bat on the ball when the winning team needed two runs on the last ball.

The wicketkeeper wasn’t able to collect the ball cleanly either, as Wiese and Malan Kruger sprinted across and completed the run. Jan Frylinck was his team’s top scorer, thanks to six fours, scoring 45 runs in 48 balls. Mehran Khan, who also bowled the final over of the innings, achieved outstanding figures of 3-7 in four overs for Oman. First to bat in the super over, Namibia scored 21 runs, with Wiese contributing 13 runs in four balls. Wiese then accepted the responsibility to bowl the super over and surrendered just 10 runs while also picking up a wicket.

Namibia won the toss earlier and chose to bowl first against Oman. Oman were only 109 all out in 19.4 overs as they batted first. Left-arm bowler Ruben Trumpelmann gave his team the perfect start with back-to-back wickets on the opening two balls of the innings as opener Kashyap Prajapati and captain Aqib Ilyas were bowled without troubling the scorers.

After the disastrous start, Oman failed to recover and kept losing wickets regularly. With 4-21 in four overs, Trumpelmann was Namibia’s best bowler. Namibia captain Gerhard Erasmus also achieved an impressive 2-20 in four overs.

David Wiese also contributed three wickets. With 34 runs in 39 balls—including a four and a six—Khalid Kail led all scorers for Oman. The two sides from T20 World Cup 2024 Group B—which also includes Scotland and arch-rivals Australia and England—met for the first time.
