Cricket Players’ Union to examine ‘broken’ structure
Former England and Wales Cricket Board chief executive Tom Harrison and ex-Pakistan women’s captain Sana Mir are among a six-person panel that will assess with independent experts. They will advise the WCA board after consulting players, administrators, team owners, and broadcasters.
“Thus, the current model is broken and unsustainable,” WCA warned Monday.
“Plus, confusing and chaotic global scheduling with no clarity on the interplay between international cricket and the domestic leagues means players are increasingly forced to choose between representing their country and optimising their careers.”
“So, change is badly needed to create ongoing clarity, and value, for players, boards and fans alike.”
Thus, WCA chair Heath Mills said: “Cricket has three fundamental formats in both international and domestic leagues, which is good.
“The game’s leadership has yet to agree on a global structure in which they can coexist. We’ve almost given up.”
In May, the Professional Cricketers’ Association revealed that 81% of players worried about the physical strain of the domestic fixture calendar with insufficient rest and rehabilitation. The ECB’s 2022 high-performance study advocated reducing domestic cricket, but English county teams rejected the idea.
Also, Former England captain Joe Root observed, “It is apparent the schedule needs to change to see long-lasting benefits for English cricket.”
