Babar Azam wants Pakistan to improve in ODIs

Pakistan’s captain, Babar Azam, knows that his team needs to keep getting better if it wants to become the best in ODI cricket. The in-form Pakistan team beat the West Indies 3-0 at home last week. They have only lost one 50-over match all year, and they want to keep going strong in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League. Babar, on the other hand, isn’t fooling himself about his team’s chances of winning India’s second 50-over World Cup.

“We still need to improve in certain areas,” Babar said following the series victory that helped Pakistan rise past India and into fourth place on the latest Men’s MRF Tyres ODI Team Rankings.

“We still lose wickets in clusters in the middle which puts us on the back foot.

“Here the players need better concentration; it’s an area to work on.

“The fielding has improved, but our body language still deteriorates when a good partnership develops, and it’s another thing we can try and improve.”

What are the chances of Babar Azam topping the charts in all three of these formats?

He knows they still have a lot of work to do before that can be certain. Babar’s great batting has been a big part of Pakistan’s recent success. He is only the second player in the history of one-day internationals (ODIs) to score three consecutive hundreds. Imam-ul-Haq started the game and made three consecutive scores of fifty or more. He was named Player of the Series for good reason. Shadab Khan and Mohammad Nawaz both took seven wickets, making them the top two bowlers. Babar was especially happy with Khushdil Shah’s great hitting, since the 27-year-old is known for scoring a lot of runs in the last few overs of an innings. But his teammates’ hard work in the series against the West Indies gave him hope, and he knows that he needs everyone’s help for Pakistan to win.

“Bench strength always gives you a lift,” Babar noted.

“Knowing you have players on the bench who are ready to use is good to know.

“We had Iftikhar (Ahmed), Abdullah Shafique and (Shahnawaz) Dahani on the bench.

“We tried a different bowling combination and they performed very well.

“It’s very satisfying as a captain to see that.”
