Alcaraz becomes ATP’s youngest player since Nadal
After reaching the Hamburg finals over the weekend, Carlos Alcaraz was officially announced as the youngest player since Rafael Nadal to break into the ATP top five. There have been no younger men since Spain’s renowned compatriot, who was 18 when he first made it into the top five, in 2005.
Despite saving five match points, Alcaraz was unable to capture the clay-court crown in Germany, falling to Italian teenager Lorenzo Musetti on Sunday. As a result of his rise up the rankings, Musetti will be seeded in the US Open, which begins on August 29. World number one Daniil Medvedev stays at the top of the rankings despite Wimbledon’s decision to remove ranking points from Russian and Belarusian players.
