The second day of the one-off Test between Afghanistan and New Zealand was abruptly called off due to pitch and outfield conditions in Greater Noida. Despite ground staff’s urgent efforts to utilise electric fans and install new turf, the match was postponed again, infuriating officials and players.
Afghan-NZ Test: Second Day Cancelled Due to ‘Huge Mess’
The Monday Test was delayed by rain and a poor pitch. Even though Tuesday was sunny, monsoon showers drenched the outfield before the game. After several inspections, umpires halted play midafternoon.
Groundsmen dried the surface using electric fans and tarps. A midwicket moist area was replaced with dry earth and new turf. These measures did not make the pitch playable.
The first Test match location was noted for poor amenities and drainage. The Times of India labelled it “ill-equipped” for such weather. An open-sided press box without internet or power is among the venue’s difficulties.
Continuing issues have obscured a key match for both clubs. Afghanistan has staged several shorter-format games at Greater Noida since 2017, but this Test shows the drawbacks of playing five-day cricket at new venues.
New Zealand’s players played rugby balls instead of training due to rain. One Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) official labelled the stadium “a huge mess” and said it might not host future matches.
Afghanistan’s 10th five-day Test since achieving Test status in 2017 shows the difficulties of arranging international cricket matches in unprepared settings. Before facing India, New Zealand will play two Tests in Sri Lanka.
Greater Noida issues must be addressed as teams and fans await a Test series resolution.
